One of the most common problems associated with the nose, and more like a disorder, is known as Nasal Septum Deviation. This disorder takes place when the nasal septum is displaced. It is basically a deformity that occurs at the point at which the nose partition separates both nostrils. This partition is made up of cartilage as well as bone and it is covered with a mucous membrane. In some people, the septum is not straight and is slightly deviated or bent instead. Such condition is present mostly in people at birth, or it can also be due to an injury to the nose. This deviation could be severe; it could shift massively from the midline and in such cases leads to blocking of the nasal passage.
Causes
As far as the causes are concerned, experts suggest that it could be due to an impact trauma. It could be something similar to a blow to the face. In addition, it could be a congenial disorder that is caused in children at birth. As mentioned earlier, this could be a birth problem. It is not too rare and there are many kids who face this problem. However, many parents fail to identify the true cause behind it, and it can also be transferred genetically. In a few cases, it runs in the family. A disorder of the tissueMarfan syndrome, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, etc.can also be the cause.
Symptoms
It has been noticed that nasal deviations are common. There are quite a few people that face this problem. However, regular deviations aren't similar to that of septal deviation. The septal deviation could become more severe over the course of time. It gets worse when the nasal passage is blocked and air does not pass through. Common symptoms are mentioned below:
Sinus infection
Nosebleeds
Headaches and colds recurring on a regular basis
And of course, blockage of the nose
Treatment
As far as treatment is concerned, the best treatment plan can be based on the symptoms that the patient is showcasing. If headaches are the dominant symptom, doctors look into medicines that help to take care of that problem too. Furthermore, it could also reduce secretions. The use of antibiotics is also prominent; it helps to decrease infection and curbs it from spreading.
At a point, when the symptoms seem very troublesome, it may become difficult to rely on drugs only. Hence, in such situations, doctors opt for corrective surgery. The option of surgery has become quite common these days; it helps patients significantly.
